Meg and Charlie, a couple from Swansea, were given tickets to the Brit Awards by Radio 1 DJ Greg James as an engagement present. The couple described the experience as a “whirlwind”, with James spending the night babysitting their seven-year-old daughter and getting his nails painted. The relationship between the couple and James began when Charlie appeared on James’ show and got his own age wrong. Since then, they’ve appeared together on the show and were expecting to take part in a “Mr and Mrs” style quiz on Friday. Instead, James told them he wanted to give away his and his wife’s tickets to the Brit Awards and offered to babysit their daughter while they attended.
Meg and Charlie described their time at the show as amazing, with seats close to the stage and plenty of celeb-spotting. They also had high praise for James, describing him as a “selfless” and “genuine person”. Originally from Pontypridd and Essex respectively, the couple joked that they had a “very romantic story” of meeting online and have been described by James as “a real life Gavin and Stacey”. They liken themselves more to Nessa and Smithy, referring to characters from the popular British TV show, and enjoy KFC.
Despite the excitement of attending the Brit Awards, Meg and Charlie kept things low-key and were back home in Swansea by 2am, ending the night with a McDonald’s. James posted pictures and videos of their time together on social media, including playing with Maisie’s dollhouse, getting his nails painted, and completing the chores Maisie assigned him.
Overall, the couple expressed their gratitude to James for the experience, describing him as “amazing” and someone who “doesn’t have to do all this but has chosen to”. It’s clear that the night was one to remember for Meg and Charlie
