Olly Alexander has released his new solo track, ‘Dizzy’, which will also represent the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest 2024. The track, which was released on March 1, is a collaboration between Alexander and electronic producer Danny L Harle. The music video for ‘Dizzy’, which blurs the line between fantasy and reality, was also released on the same day. Inspired by club classics from the 00s, the song captures the euphoric rush of being with someone new.

According to Alexander, he wrote the song last summer with Harle, taking the word ‘Dizzy’ as inspiration. “The song is about feeling such an intense swell of emotion for someone they totally turn your world upside down and inside out,” he said. The song also captures elements of 80s music, with Alexander drawing inspiration from Erasure, Adamski, and the Pet Shop Boys.

Alexander, who previously fronted Years & Years has high hopes for the UK at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, which will take place in Sweden on May 11. The singer says he hopes to “fly the flag for the [UK] in the gayest way possible” when he takes to the stage with ‘Dizzy’. Each country submits an original song, which is then performed live in front of a panel of judges. The winner of the contest is typically crowned the following year’s host nation.

Alexander’s song follows in the footsteps of Mae Muller, who represented the UK in 2023, and Sam Ryder, who finished second in the 2022 competition. Alexander’s song and accompanying music video will also feature in Graham Meets Olly, a one-off special that will see Eurovision commentator Graham Norton chat to Alexander about his upcoming performance in Sweden.

The stage design for this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, held in the 15,500-capacity Malmö Arena, was revealed towards the end of 2023. The design promises to be “a unique 360-degree experience that surrounds the audience and viewers”. Whether it’s enough to help Alexander and the UK capture the top prize remains to be seen
