Scotland’s First Minister Humza Yousaf and his wife Nadia El-Nakla have announced that they are expecting their second child this summer. In a statement, Yousaf expressed his delight at the news and thanked the early pregnancy unit at Ninewells Hospital for their support. The couple’s eldest daughter, Amal, is four years old, while Yousaf is also stepfather to 14-year-old Maya. Yousaf and El-Nakla have previously spoken about their struggle with recurrent miscarriages, with the First Minister stating in September 2020 that the couple had lost four babies.
The announcement comes after Economy Secretary Màiri McAllan revealed she is expecting her first child and will take maternity leave this summer. She informed Yousaf of her pregnancy at the start of the year and is currently finalizing arrangements to ensure her portfolio priorities are delivered. It has not yet been announced who will take on cover for McAllan during her maternity leave.
This will be the first time a Scottish First Minister has had a child while in office. Yousaf’s announcement has been received with widespread congratulations from colleagues across the political spectrum. Yousaf has led the Scottish Government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, while also tackling issues such as climate change and independence for Scotland.
In his statement, Yousaf spoke of his gratitude for the support the couple had received from family and friends: “We are incredibly grateful for the love that we have received from our family and friends upon sharing our news with them. Our daughters, Maya and Amal, are both very excited to meet the new baby”. The baby is due to be born in July
