Gearbox, the developers of Borderlands, may be sold by their parent company Embracer Group to a third party, according to a recent report. Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford reportedly told employees that a decision has been made about the future of the company, but that more information won’t be released until next month. Sources close to Gearbox claim that Pitchford has mentioned three possible scenarios: staying with Embracer Group, selling to another company, or buying out their contract and becoming independent.

Pitchford issued a statement in response to the rumours, saying he was “honoured and humbled that our company is a topic of rumour, speculation, and discussion”. He added that the company would be “thrilled to share” news about future projects when they have announcements to make.

This news comes following reports earlier this week that Embracer Group subsidiary Saber Interactive, the team behind the upcoming Knights of the Old Republic remake, may also be sold to private investors for up to $500m. This news follows a restructuring programme at Embracer Group that began last June and has seen over 1,400 employees laid off across the group.

Meanwhile, Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered is set to receive new bug fixes in the coming weeks, following the discovery that the Epic Games Store version of the game had different assets to the Steam version.

Overall, it remains to be seen what will happen with Gearbox, but it’s clear that the video game industry as a whole is undergoing a period of change, with various companies being bought and sold and the landscape shifting rapidly. Fans of Borderlands and Gearbox will doubtless be keen to see what the future holds for this popular franchise and its creators
