During a visit to a synagogue, Prince William spoke out against the recent increase in antisemitism. The Prince of Wales, visiting young people and students in London, was informed about the rise in antisemitism since the 7th of October Hamas attacks, along with Israel’s retaliatory military campaign in Gaza. Prince William condemned the current trend of hatred towards the Jewish community, stating that it had no place in society. He explained that both he and his wife Catherine were “extremely concerned” about the increasing prevalence of antisemitism.
During the visit, the prince met a Holocaust survivor, young people, and Jewish student representatives who have been impacted by antisemitism. The head of the Union of Jewish Students UK and Ireland told Prince William about the explosion of antisemitism on college campuses, with students receiving death threats, being physically assaulted, and Jewish property being desecrated. The prince was told of the ‘dehumanizing’ effect this has on individuals in the Jewish community.
Prince William called on people to “break out” of the ‘boxes’ that divide them. He explained that a lot of people live in their silos, inside an echo chamber on social media, without different influences or knowing anyone who’s Jewish. Prince William suggested that it was necessary to break out of those boxes.
Karen Pollock, the CEO of the Holocaust Educational Trust, said Prince William “reminded us that antisemitism is not only a problem for the Jewish community but for all society”. She praised Prince William’s visit as it sends a powerful message that the UK is a country that welcomes and celebrates Jews, including Holocaust survivors and young Jewish students.
