During a surprise appearance with Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong, Courtney Love announced that she would be returning with Hole. The announcement took place during a gig at The Garage in Islington, where Armstrong performed with his covers band, The Coverups. Upon being invited on stage, Love helped to belt out some covers before revealing to the crowd that she would be “back” with her former band at a later date. The gig was one of two surprise shows Armstrong announced last week and saw his band deliver renditions of rock and punk classics.
Love had previously shared mixed messages about whether or not she would be open to a Hole reunion. In a 2019 interview with The Guardian, she indicated that the band was considering a comeback, while in 2021, she put a dampener on the prospect, stating that a proper Hole reunion would not happen. However, during her cameo with The Coverups, Love reignited rumours about a Hole reunion, much to the delight of fans.
The surprise appearance with The Coverups wasn’t Love’s first foray back into music this year. In October, she played a surprise acoustic set at a fundraiser for Joe Biden’s presidential campaign, and in November, she released a new song through her Instagram called “Mother”.
Love, who has pursued a solo career in the past, released her debut LP, America’s Sweetheart, in 2004. The album was recorded while she was struggling with drug addiction, and in a 2020 interview, she declared it as one of her “life’s great shames.” She has since hinted at working on more solo material, but has yet to release any follow-up albums.
As news of the potential reunion spreads, fans are eagerly anticipating the return of Love and Hole to the stage
