Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender has been released, much to the dismay of many fans of the original show. The latest incarnation follows Aang, the last survivor of the airbender tribe, as he trains to become the Avatar after being discovered frozen in ice. He must learn to master all four elements – air, water, earth, and fire – to defeat the villainous Firelord Ozai and liberate the world from his authoritarian rule.
Gordon Cormier stars as Aang, Kiawentiio plays Katara, and Ian Ousley portrays Sokka. Meanwhile, Dallas Liu stars as Prince Zuko. The original anime series, which was critically acclaimed, aired for three seasons between 2005 and 2008. In 2010, a film adaptation was made by M. Night Shyamalan and was panned by critics.
Reviews of the new show have been mixed. NME gave the series three stars, saying, “Such is the exuberant nature of The Last Airbender, it’s hard not to get swept up in this crazed fantasy. If nothing else, it sure banishes memory of the Shyamalan travesty.” However, fan reactions have been less positive, with many criticizing the rushed production and poor script.
Despite these criticisms, some viewers are enjoying the new show and praising its adaptation. One fan said, “This adaptation is well done and keeps you wanting to see the next episode so far. Glad Netflix put money into this.” It remains to be seen whether the show will ultimately live up to fans’ expectations, but it seems to have captured the spirit of the original series for some viewers
