Fans of the NieR franchise have been speculating about a possible third game for some time now. Director Yoko Taro has recently given them more reason to do so. Taro made a surprise appearance at a Valentine’s Day NieR: Orchestra Concert in London’s Royal Festival Hall. During the concert, he asked the audience to applaud as loudly as they could, so that Square Enix boss Takashi Kiryu who was also present in the crowd, would know there is an appetite for a follow-up to 2017’s NieR Automata. One fan reported that the room immediately erupted into claps, cheers, and yells.
Elsewhere during the concert, the word “REPENT” was displayed several times during the performance, before it shifted to say “R3PENT”. This seems like a not-so-subtle tease that a third NieR game may be on the way. Fans from around the world have confirmed a similar message at their shows.
In 2010, the original NieR was released, with a remaster following in 2021. NieR series producer Yosuke Saito confirmed last year that he was working on a new project alongside Taro that was not linked to the world of NieR. Nonetheless, he said that he’d work on future NieR titles as long as Taro was alive. Taro himself said that he is preparing various things to be ready to carry out the “surprise” mentioned in the keyword in early 2024.
As part of their 2021 Christmas message, Taro jokingly confirmed that the NieR franchise was over, but he would make another game for “a big ‘ole pile of money.” However, it seems that fans may have something to look forward to after all.
