Since its launch on February 23rd, the campaign “DJs Against Apartheid” has gained over 500 signatures from electronic musicians recognizing the Palestinian cause. The list of supporters includes Logic1000, Saliah, Conducta, Mama Snake, and KAVARI. Artists from around the world have already pledged their support for the campaign, founded with the help of New York-based collective Palestine Forever. The official website asks DJs to “join hands” to end the 75-year occupation and emphasizes that dance music is not an appropriate medium for celebration or festivities during times of genocide.
Nour Khalil, co-founder of Palestine Forever and organizer of DJs Against Apartheid, stated that the campaign was launched because it required “something more specific” than the Artists Against Apartheid initiative. The initiative draws on the inclusive political history and ideology of dance music, which supports and uplifts marginalized communities. The movement has always been centered around imagining and creating a safer, freer, and fairer world for all people.
Launched in 2023, Artists Against Apartheid initially invited artists from all mediums to create art for a “free Palestine.” Since then, the movement has organized marches, exhibitions, panels, workshops, and protests, and has gained support from famous musicians such as Macklemore, Kid Cudi, and Kehlani. DJs Against Apartheid’s first panel and workshop is scheduled in New York on February 27th, where NYC signees have been invited to discuss politics, history, cultural organizing, liberation movements, and the NYC dance scene in reference to apartheid.
