Sophie Ellis-Bextor has issued a warning to fans about a recent scam using her music. Taking to social media platform Instagram, the singer addressed subscribers about a fake advertising campaign that featured her sound. The clip featured an AI-generated voice-over created by deep-learning algorithms. It also included footage of the singer, popular 2001 hit “Murder on the Dancefloor,” and direct prompts for viewers to enter credit card details.
Ellis-Bextor clarified the situation in a subsequent post that stressed her other social media accounts are trustworthy. She thanked her dedicated followers for alerting her to the misleading adverts. In recent months the single has gained considerable traction after featuring on Netflix movie “Saltburn.” The hit has also recently enjoyed a new surge of interest on TikTok, earning a Billboard Hot 100 listing, and climbing UK single charts.
In response, the singer has announced a new set of performances that will showcase her music’s popularity later this spring. Among the tracks to be included, the revived “Murder on the Dancefloor” will feature prominently. Across seven events in the US, Ellis-Bextor will entertain audiences with other hits from her back catalog. Locations include San Francisco, San Diego, Toronto, Washington DC, Philadelphia, Boston, and New York City. However, tickets for the latter show have already sold out.
Ellis-Bextor’s recent worldwide success is only part of her story. She recently spoke to NME about her career and the scope for her music. The 2000s were a period for the artist that saw her climb the charts in Europe, Southeast Asia, and Latin America, while receiving little interest from the United States. Speaking about the resurgence of her hit, she admits that to US audiences, it is a new release, but for her, the thrill is the emerging fanbase and not success itself. The renewed popularity has seen her perform on the BAFTA Film awards and on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.” As one of the UK’s most downloaded female vocalists, Ellis-Bextor’s unique sound and style remain an enduring attraction.
