The RMT Union has declared its support for former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn in the next general election. Corbyn, who has served as MP for Islington North since 1983, was banned from running as a Labour candidate last year following his suspension from the party amid a row over antisemitism. The 74-year-old politician is expected to stand as an independent in the next election.

RMT General Secretary Mick Lynch confirmed the union’s support for Corbyn at the War on Want conference. He stated that the union would be backing a range of candidates, including Labour and socialist candidates, but specifically noted its support for Corbyn. RMT has been disassociated from Labour since 2004 and is free to support non-Labour candidates.

In 2015, Corbyn was elected leader of the Labour Party, but he resigned in 2019 following the party’s defeat in the general election. The current Parliament must be dissolved by December 17, 2024, on the fifth anniversary of its assembly, and the election must be held by January 28, 2025. Although Prime Minister Rishi Sunak reportedly expects to call the election in the second half of 2024, he has yet to announce a date.
