The former Conservative deputy chairman, Lee Anderson, has come under fire for making remarks about London Mayor Sadiq Khan. Speaking on GB News, Anderson claimed that “Islamists” had “got control” of Khan and have therefore gained control over London. These comments have been criticized by both the Labour and Conservative parties, with some calling them racist and Islamophobic. Even former chancellor Sir Sajid Javid reposted the video and called the remarks “ridiculous.”
In response to Anderson’s comments, Khan has criticized Chancellor Rishi Sunak and his cabinet for their “deafening silence.” He claims their lack of response is condoning racism and has led many to believe there is a hierarchy when it comes to racism in the UK. Khan condemned Anderson’s comments as “pouring fuel on the fire of anti-Muslim hatred” and described them as Islamophobic and racist.
The comments come in the aftermath of pro-Palestinian protests held outside Parliament. Anderson’s remarks have been seen by some as an attempt to stir up tensions among different communities. However, whilst his remarks may have elicited condemnation from across the political spectrum, some believe they will only serve to further deepen divisions and sow hatred.
It is not yet clear if any more will come of this incident but it has once again highlighted the problem of racism and Islamophobia in the UK. Some are calling for greater action to be taken to address these issues and to promote unity and harmony between different communities
