The makers of the upcoming Community movie have been giving fans hints about the progress of the project, with Dan Harmon, who created the show, revealing that the script is almost complete. Donald Glover, who played Troy Barnes on the programme, had previously mentioned that the script had already been finished, but Harmon said that while that was almost true, it was not quite the case. The original programme was ended after six seasons, but the fan base never lost their love for the characters and the idea of a movie to give the show a more satisfying conclusion began to take shape. After almost a decade of hopes and rumours, a new TV special was released last year, and a movie is now in the works.
Although there is no official release date for the Community movie, it seems that all concerned are very enthusiastic about the idea. Harmon had previously talked about the nerves the project induced but, in a recent update, he described the script as being ‘almost done’, adding that he was excited about it. Susan Rovner, Chairman of Entertainment Content at NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, described it as ‘an epic comedy for Peacock audiences’. Glover has said that he is committed to the movie despite not having seen the final script, while the other original cast members have all said that they will reprise their roles.
One notable absence from the movie will be Chevy Chase, who played the character of Pierce Hawthorne. Chase left the show in its fourth season, and his relationship with Harmon had broken down. Although his character was killed off in the fifth season, the team have found a way to honour the original film concept ‘six seasons and a movie’, which has become a popular sentiment among the fan base.
The original run of Community was popular with fans and critics, with innovative storylines and clever references to popular culture. Although the show was not a massive ratings success, it developed a cult following, which made it a good fit for a movie adaptation. The original cast members have all gone on to successful careers in the years since the show ended, and there will be a hope among fans that the movie will bring them all back together for one final time
