Charli XCX has given fans a taste of what to expect from her upcoming album, revealing that it will be a dance record that goes back to her roots in club music. The new record, which will be her sixth, has not yet been assigned a release date, though it is known that ‘Von Dutch’, which the musician previewed on social media recently, is likely to be the album’s lead single. Charli last released an album in 2022 with ‘Crash’.
Writing on the social media platform X, Charli declared her intentions for the new LP, stating that dance music was in her DNA and that XCX6 was the album she had always wanted to make. Referring to the club scenes that pupils her, she said: “I was born to make dance music…XCX6 is the album I’ve always wanted to make.” The statement came after Charli appeared at a Boiler Room event where she previewed new songs alongside classic hits like ‘Vroom Vroom’.
At the event, Charli paid tribute to her late collaborator SOPHIE. One of Charli’s close friends SOPHIE died at the age of 34 in January 2021. In an interview with The Face, Charli revealed that one of the new album’s tracks explores her grief over the loss of SOPHIE: “She believed in me in ways that I didn’t believe [in] myself. But I felt like I would never be interesting enough to operate in her world outside of the studio, which was the safe space where we could connect and bond over music.”
Charli has collaborated with SOPHIE on many projects since 2015, including the EP ‘Vroom Vroom’, the singles ‘After the Afterparty’, ‘No Angel’ and ‘Girls Night Out’
