Comedian and actor Amy Schumer announced in journalist Jessica Yellin’s newsletter ‘News Not Noise’ that she has been diagnosed with Cushing’s syndrome. The condition, caused by an excessive accumulated amount of cortisol in the body, the primary stress hormone, can be severe if left untreated. Symptoms include a puffy, rounded face and weight gain.
Fans have been commenting on Schumer’s puffy face, prompting her to respond to “everyone’s input” by saying that there were “medical and hormonal things going on” in her world.
Yellin confirmed in the newsletter that Schumer has exogenous Cushing syndrome, which was brought on by high doses of steroid injections. Yellin also asked Schumer why she had decided to share such “personal medical information” publicly. Schumer responded that she wanted to advocate for women’s health and that she had dealt with the shaming and criticism of changing bodies for years.
Schumer also confirmed that she had been undergoing MRI scans, and, while she feared the worst, she was relieved to find out that she had Cushing’s syndrome, which would “just work itself out,” and that it could have been much worse.
