New details have emerged in the case of the three young children who were found dead at a house in Bristol earlier this week. A post-mortem has revealed that nine-month-old Mohammed Bash, three-year-old Joury Bash and seven-year-old Fares Bash all died from knife wounds. Police were responding to a welfare call in Sea Mills at 00:40 GMT on Sunday when they made the discovery. A 42-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of murder. Reports suggest that she remains in hospital receiving treatment for non-life threatening injuries.
Ch Insp Vicks Hayward-Melen, from Avon and Somerset Police, expressed her condolences to the family: “The loss of such young children, who had their whole lives ahead of them, is truly heart-breaking.” The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has been notified about the case as a result of “prior police contact” earlier this month. Specialist liaison officers are working with the family.
A community vigil will take place on Friday evening to remember the children. Local police officers will attend, and a mobile police station will be set up over the weekend for residents with further questions. The incident has triggered a huge outpouring of care and kindness in the community, which Ch Insp Hayward-Melen thanked: “Out of the intense sadness, we’ve seen the community come together in grief.”
The investigation is progressing quickly, with the major crime investigation team carrying out comprehensive inquiries to establish the events leading up to this tragedy. The police cordon has now been lifted, but a large number of floral tributes and messages remain at the scene.
