Wendy Mitchell, who spent 10 years advocating for dementia awareness, has passed away at the age of 68. Two of her books on the subject made the Sunday Times Bestseller List. Mitchell was diagnosed with early onset dementia in 2014 and began her blog, Which Me Am I Today?, soon after. Prior to her diagnosis, she worked for the NHS in a non-clinical role in York for 20 years.
In her final blog post, titled My Final Hug in a Mug, Mitchell shared her perspective on living with the disease. She stated that dementia is “a cruel disease that plays tricks on your very existence,” and discussed the resilience she developed as a child that allowed her to “cope with whatever life throws my way.”
Mitchell’s daughters announced her passing in a social media post on February 22. The post read, “Our mum died peacefully early this morning. She wrote a blog post before she died so you can read about it from her perspective.”
Steve Milton, director of Innovations in Dementia, praised Mitchell’s contributions to the Alzheimer’s community. He said, “Wendy was a person of true bravery and compassion. She had been fearless in sharing her experience in order that others may learn from it. She was a beacon, and so many people have told us over the years that her work has changed their view about dementia.”
Mitchell’s legacy will continue to inspire others to raise awareness and promote understanding about the disease
