The Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) has issued an apology after reports emerged of a former female employee being sexually assaulted at the Principality Stadium. The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, claims that she was assaulted on two separate occasions, with one of them happening in a cupboard at the stadium between 2019 and 2021.
WRU CEO Abi Tierney responded to the allegations, describing the behaviour reported in an ITV article as “totally unacceptable.” Previously, an independent review uncovered a culture of sexism, misogyny, racism, and homophobia at the heart of the Rugby Union, which led to a sexism scandal.
Ms Tierney apologised directly to the individual involved, stating that the WRU will not and has never tolerated any kind of unwanted sexual behaviour. The culture of the organisation did not prevent the incident from occurring, according to Ms Tierney, and the current HR policies for addressing such incidents were not appropriate in some instances.
Ms Tierney emphasised the WRU’s commitment to change, stating that the issue has already contributed to recommendations for change that the organisation is committed to delivering.
