The film biopic of Michael Jackson, entitled Michael, is set to be released in 2025 and the cast have been announced. The film will receive a theatrical release in the US on April 18th and will be directed by Antoine Fuqua, director of Training Day, The Equalizer, and Brooklyn’s Finest. The script will be written by John Logan, who previously worked on films such as Gladiator, The Aviator, Skyfall and Spectre.
Jaafar Jackson, son of Michael’s brother Jermaine, will play the King of Pop in the film. The Jackson estate is connected to the film, raising questions as to whether it will delve into the allegations of child sexual abuse. Director of the Michael Jackson documentary, Leaving Neverland, Dan Reed, has criticized the film’s production stating that it “will glorify a man who raped children”.
Colman Domingo will play Joe Jackson and Miles Teller will play John Branca. Playing the role of Michael’s mother, Katherine Jackson, will be Nia Long. The role of young Michael will be filled by 9-year-old newcomer Juliano Krue Valdi. Fuqua stated that casting for the role of young Michael was more difficult than casting the adult role due to the sheer talent required, which was embodied by Valdi.
Filming began last month in Santa Monica following a delay due to the 2023 acting strike. The UK release date is yet to be announced. Producer Graham King said Jaafar had “Every look, every note, every dance move” down to a tee, making him the perfect fit for the role
