Taylor Swift has announced that she plans to make changes to the way she approaches the surprise songs portion of her ‘Eras’ tour. When the tour began in March 2021, Swift said she would play a different surprise song in the acoustic part of her set each night, without repeats. However, the pop star has now modified her rule, saying she wants to be as creative as possible and not limit herself by only playing each song once.
“I don’t wanna just say, ‘Oh, if I’ve played a song before I can’t play it again,’” Swift said during a show in Melbourne on 18 February 2024. “So from now on, I don’t wanna take any paint colours out of the paint box of colours. I want to be able to play songs more than once if I feel like it, and I wanna be able to make changes to songs.”
Swift’s Australian fans were treated to the first example of her new approach on the same night, as she performed a mashup of her songs ‘Getaway Car’, ‘August’ and ‘The Other Side of the Door’. She previously amended her rule about never repeating surprise songs to allow for the inclusion of tracks from her 2022 album ‘Midnights’.
Earlier in February, Swift announced her next album, ‘The Tortured Poets Department’. At the end of 2023, she confirmed she would refresh her selection of surprise songs for the following year
