Nick Cave shares advice to artists uninspired to create in a “sick” and “cruel” world

Nick Cave has responded to two artists who have said they feel uninspired amidst the current state of the world. The two creatives, named Tam and Dan, contacted Cave’s website Red Hand Files to express their difficulties in continuing their work. Tam said their muse had disappeared and they had lost all motivation to create, while Dan struggled with creating art in a world marked by war, cruelty, and violence.

Cave’s response to both creators questioned why they felt their particular job was exceptional, requiring inspiration and a muse, rather than a responsibility to create. He highlighted that commitment cannot afford the luxury of revelation and that muses are for losers. Instead, he believes art is a noble and necessary response to the world’s sins, and artists must do their job to avoid the multiple excuses that arise.

Cave suggested that the world would be much crueler if it were not for painters, musicians, and filmmakers, among others, who create things while wading through the blood and muck of experiences. Instead of sitting around moaning about the state of the world, he implored artists to get to work and create like their life depends on it as, according to Cave, it indeed does.

This isn’t the first time Cave has responded to those seeking advice about creating. Recently he offered guidance to an aspiring 17-year-old singer on how to gain confidence and another person lacking direction while on their gap year. Meanwhile, music from Cave and collaborator Warren Ellis will feature in the upcoming Amy Winehouse biopic, Back to Black
