Danny Jones has emerged as the winner of the reality singing competition The Masked Singer. The McFly guitarist and singer was revealed as the celebrity beneath the Piranha costume, beating out Cricket (Lemar) and Bigfoot (Alex Brooker) in the final. This was Jones’ second shot at a singing reality show, having previously finished fourth on Popstar to Operastar in 2010.
The show features anonymous performers singing pop songs while donning elaborate masks and costumes, with a panel of judges attempting to guess their identities based on their singing and cryptic hints. Previous winners include Girls Aloud’s Nicola Roberts, singer-songwriter Joss Stone, pop star Natalie Imbruglia, and Busted’s Charlie Simpson.
Jones is the third member of McFly to win a reality TV show, following in the footsteps of Harry Judd (Strictly Come Dancing) and Dougie Poynter (I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!). Panellist Jonathan Ross was effusive in his praise for Jones, declaring his performance of Lay Me Down by Sam Smith the “best performance…of any series.”
Other celebrities unmasked on this season of The Masked Singer included Shirley Ballas, Dionne Warwick, Nicky Campbell, Lorraine Kelly, Tiffany, and more. The finale also featured duets with former contestants Charlotte Church, Ricky Wilson, and Natalie Appleton. Judges included presenter Davina McCall, singer Rita Ora, comedian Mo Gilligan, and special guest Rob Brydon
