BBC Radio 1 host Jordan North has announced his departure from the station. The Lancashire presenter has worked at Radio 1 for 10 years and currently hosts the drivetime show with Vick Hope. Yesterday, it was revealed that North was leaving the station and would be replaced by Made in Chelsea’s Jamie Laing, a move which has caused controversy amongst listeners.
North shared his own statement about the news on social media, thanking his colleagues and fellow presenters, as well as the listeners of his shows. He also shared several photos from his time at Radio 1, adding that he will be back soon.
Listeners have taken issue with the decision to replace North with Laing, with some suggesting that journalists with the necessary skills and experience should be given priority over reality stars with “good agents.” Others have complained about “classism”, suggesting that hiring a “posh toff” from Made in Chelsea to replace a “funny, northern, relatable chap” is indicative of a problem in the industry.
North previously worked at Rock FM and Capital Manchester, and was a runner-up on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! in 2020. He currently co-hosts the podcast Help I Sexted My Boss alongside etiquette expert William Hanson
