The latest season of True Detective, titled Night Country, has broken viewing records for HBO since its release on January 14th. Starring Jodie Foster, Kali Reis, Christopher Eccleston, and Fiona Shaw, the fourth season of the popular crime drama series has just released its penultimate episode.

Nielsen and Warner Bros. Discovery explain that the show has gained 12.7 million viewers. These figures include average views across HBO and Max. As a result, Night Country has now become the show’s most-watched season, beating fan-favourite season one, which starred Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson and had 11.9 million viewers.

The first episode of Night Country began with 2 million viewers and has shown steady increments for each additional episode. Episode five, aired early most recently due to the Super Bowl, saw 5 million viewers. The show’s increasing audience has led to this record.

True Detective: Night Country, created by Issa López, explores the investigation of the disappearance of eight men working at a research station. Set in the fictitious town of Ennis, Alaska, the show stars Foster and Reis as the police detectives offering investigators into the strange case.

Despite some mixed reviews by viewers upon its release, Night Country has gained this record-breaking number of viewers, even surpassing its critically acclaimed season one. As NME puts it, Night Country is a “female-driven return to form that weaves supernatural elements and a sensitive mental health narrative into a riveting and intricate detective story.
