Sussex Police have reported that six people have been sent to hospital after migrants were found in a lorry aboard a ferry in East Sussex. The total number of people has not yet been confirmed. Sussex Police have arrested a man on suspicion of facilitating illegal entry to the UK and a second man was arrested for illegally entering the UK. Border Force and police were on the scene, with pictures showing several ambulances in attendance. The South East Coast Ambulance Service said it was called to the port at 09:40 GMT.
The port remains open and no fatalities have been reported. The Home Office has said Border Force is aiding the emergency services and that it would be inappropriate to comment further while the incident is ongoing. Speaking about the situation, Lewes MP Maria Caulfield expressed her concern and said she had been watching the activity at the port from her office in Newhaven.
The ferry was still in port by 13:00, according to Ms Caulfield.
