Salisbury mayor Atiqul Hoque has been expelled from the Conservative Party over allegations of antisemitic remarks. The Salisbury Conservative Association received a formal complaint about “offensive and inappropriate comments” made by Hoque on social media and WhatsApp. The party said that after an investigation into the matter, Hoque would be expelled from the Conservative Party. The BBC has approached Hoque for comment, but he has not yet responded.

While Hoque is a councillor on Salisbury City Council and has been the mayor since May 2023, he is no longer a Conservative representative. It is understood that he will continue to serve out his term as mayor as an independent. According to the association spokesperson, the party is “committed to upholding the values of tolerance, diversity, and respect”. After receiving the complaint, the party initiated a thorough investigation in accordance with their robust complaints process.

The complaints process allows individuals the opportunity to present their perspective and “allows for a fair and impartial assessment of the situation”. Following a careful examination of the evidence, it was determined that Hoque’s comments are in clear breach of the standards expected from individuals holding public office. The spokesperson said that the party takes such matters seriously and prioritizes high ethical standards and values within their party. Hoque does have a right to appeal, but as of now, he is no longer a Conservative representative.

The allegations against Hoque come at a time when politicians worldwide are facing pressure to be more sensitive to their words and actions, particularly on social media. Political correctness is being seen as vital for maintaining the integrity of the public office and ensuring politicians’ accountability. The Conservative Party’s expulsion of Hoque from the party sends a strong message and demonstrates their commitment to maintaining high ethical standards and values within their ranks
