Following a large-scale pro-Palestinian protest outside his family home, Conservative MP Tobias Ellwood has expressed concern that politicians can no longer be regarded as “fair game”. Over 60 people gathered outside his home on Monday calling for a Gaza ceasefire, some of them holding Palestinian flags.
Dorset Police were deployed, and whilst no arrests were made, the protesters dispersed by 20:50 GMT. The march was organised in response to the Israeli bombing of Rafah in southern Gaza, described by the demonstrators as “the place of shelter for more than 1.6 million refugees.” They are demanding that Ellwood call for “an immediate and unconditional ceasefire” in Gaza.
Ellwood praised the speed at which the police acted, protecting his property and blocking his driveway. He warned that the “bar of acceptable treatment” of MPs was steadily falling and could no longer be normalised.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak referenced this incident on Twitter, declaring his support and stating that their democratic values must be upheld and MPs’ security protected. Ellwood stated that he would not be intimidated by such behaviour and that it motivated him further to maintain his stance on important issues.
