The 2009 best-selling novel by David Nicholls, One Day, has been adapted into a new television series that premiered on Netflix on February 8. The show comprises of fourteen episodes, with the two lead roles being played by Leo Woodall and Ambika Mod. The supporting cast includes Tim McInnerny, Essie Davis, and Joely Richardson. Woodall is well-known for his role in the HBO drama The White Lotus as Jack. Mod rose to prominence portraying Shruti in the series This is Going to Hurt.
The book, which was published in 2009, tells the stories of two protagonists by documenting one day from each year of their lives over a period of two decades. The new adaptation improves on the 2011 film version of the novel, which was critically panned, starred Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess. In a glowing review of the television series, NME wrote: “One Day fans can breathe a sigh of relief…” with the refreshing adaptation of the novel, it’s sure to win more fans and a new appreciation for the author and the story.
The show was developed as a limited series, with 14 episodes covering the entire book. Though the programme makers haven’t commented on whether a second series is coming, it is unlikely. The show’s content entails a tragedy that occurs in the season’s closing stages, seemingly shutting down hopes for a new season. Nonetheless, it’s possible that Netflix could bring the show back, with new source material, if it proves popular with audiences. However, Nicholls hasn’t yet written a follow-up to the novel, and it’s unclear what the format could be. Some fans have suggested following the characters on a different day over the last 20 years through a flashback structure which could work, but Netflix has announced no plans for a follow-up at present.
The series spans two decades, covering the period from the 1980s to 2000s. It follows the lives of the two lead characters from their college days in Edinburgh into adulthood as they juggle their personal relationships, careers, and life choices. The series documents the conflicts, heartbreaks, and milestones of the two characters, with an ending that left many viewers in shock. Despite its tragic climax, the series is a must-watch for those who wish to witness a gripping story and brilliant performances from the actors
