Declan McKenna’s newest album, ‘What Happened To The Beach?’ has been compared to Paul McCartney’s highly underrated 1971 album, ‘Ram’. During an interview with NME, the singer-songwriter talked about the inspiration behind his latest album and explained that he focused on creating a different style of songwriting instead of competing with his previous albums. Comparing his album with McCartney’s ‘Ram’, McKenna said that both albums share the same intimacy and the way they were recorded is quite similar too. “On tracks like ‘Admiral Halsey’, he goes in on these wild vocal takes – and I feel like my album has elements of that too,” he added.
The British singer-songwriter added that McCartney’s and ‘The Beatles’ song are hits, and there is no filler really. He also stated that he would love to see the group perform as virtual holograms because it would be amazing to hear them play “anything.”
McKenna’s third studio album has been given a glowing four-star review by NME who praised the singer for his inward approach to the tracks. Labeling it as a “truly joyful effort,” NME also said that perfectionism was released to make space for creativity.
The 25-year-old artist has planned to make several UK festival appearances over the summer, including performances at Boardmasters and Truck Festival.
To hear McCartney’s ‘Ram’ and McKenna’s ‘What Happened To The Beach?’ is to hear two albums that share similarities in the way they are recorded, their intimacy, and the style of their songwriting. With both albums being adored by fans and critics alike, it’s no wonder McKenna looks up to McCartney and The Beatles
