In a recent interview with GQ, Cillian Murphy admitted that he has not watched many of his own films. He shared that Johnny Depp also does not watch his own work, stating, “Generally the ones I haven’t seen are the ones I hear are not good.” However, Murphy has seen some of his movies, including the 2005 thriller Red Eye, in which he starred alongside Rachel McAdams and Brian Cox.
Despite enjoying working on the film with McAdams, Murphy stated that he “doesn’t think it’s a good movie” but added that it’s “a good B movie.” He also revealed that he was drawn to the role of the seemingly polite and charming passenger who turns out to be a terrorist because of the character’s duality: “The nice guy and the bad guy in one. The only reason it appealed to me is that you could do that turn, you know?”
Murphy’s latest role is in Christopher Nolan’s biopic Oppenheimer, in which he plays theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer. The film has received thirteen Oscar nominations, including one for Murphy’s performance. When asked if he had seen the movie, Murphy responded with a groan and said, “Yes, I’ve seen Oppenheimer…”
NME gave Oppenheimer a five-star review, praising Murphy’s portrayal of the complicated man. The review stated, “Murphy brings him brilliantly to life; cold and contradictory in a film that roars with fire. Literally.”
