Nominees for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame have been announced, and among them are some of the most iconic artists of our time. For the first time, stars such as Oasis, Ozzy Osbourne, Mariah Carey, Sinead O’Connor, Cher, Sade, Peter Frampton, Foreigner, Kool & the Gang, and Lenny Kravitz have been nominated. Other finalists include Dave Matthews Band, Eric B. & Rakim, Jane’s Addiction, Mary J. Blige, and A Tribe Called Quest. A recurrent nomination criteria for the awards is that the artist or band must have had their first commercial recording at least 25 years prior to the year of nomination.

Osbourne has already been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Black Sabbath. However, his wife, Sharon, expressed her dissatisfaction with the Hall of Fame for not inducting him as a solo artist. Responding to the nomination this year, Osbourne describes the occasion as a remarkable milestone in his career. At the same time, Carey expresses her excitement at being among the legendary nominees.

The winners for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction will be announced in late April, and the formal induction into the Hall will take place in Cleveland this fall. An international voting body of more than 1000 artists and music industry professionals, and fans are invited to participate in selecting who will be inducted.

Last year’s inductees included Kate Bush, George Michael, Sheryl Crow, Tom Morello’s band Rage Against The Machine, Missy Eliott, The Spinners, and Willie Nelson. However, the significant absence of female and Black inductees in past years did not go unnoticed. Hole frontwoman Courtney Love highlighted this issue and called for recognition of the contributions made by visionary women artists to popular music.
