During a recent talk at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, Bradley Cooper shared that he considered asking Adele to star in his directorial debut, 2018’s A Star Is Born. Cooper played struggling country rock singer Jack in the romantic musical drama, with Lady Gaga starring opposite him as up-and-coming singer Ally. Cooper’s thought process involved Adele filling Gaga’s role, but ultimately, it “never even took off.”
Cooper also mentioned that Beyoncé was previously given the role but had to drop out, adding that “she was incredible. And we went down the road and then it didn’t work out. I remember I was so nervous. I had this weird cough as I was pitching it to her.”
Cooper had also considered musician Jack White for his own role in the film. Adele recently expressed in Vanity Fair that she would be open to pursuing an acting career, and that there is one particular movie she has in mind. “There is one movie I want to do, but the guy whose movie it would be, he’s not mentally ready to write the script for it,” she mentioned.
Cooper’s latest project was the Leonard Bernstein biopic Maestro, which he directed while in character as the late conductor. Cooper said that he was inspired by Christian Bale’s method in 2013’s American Hustle. “American Hustle was the first time I saw an actor stay in the voice of a character,” he said. “It was Christian Bale. I had heard stories about Daniel Day-Lewis. I couldn’t figure out how someone could do that. Then I realized I was overthinking it.”
Cooper’s experience with Bale has had a noticeable impact on his own acting skills, adapting Bale’s approach of staying in character whilst filming, but still allowing space for conversations that do not disrupt the performance
