In a surprise appearance at an NFL award ceremony in Las Vegas, Prince Harry presented an award to US footballer Cameron Heyward. Heyward was expressing his thanks to many of his supporters and couldn’t quite believe that it was the Duke of Sussex handing him the prize. It is nice to see Harry out and about, especially as he has just returned from an emotional and brief visit to London to see his father, King Charles, after the announcement that he is suffering from cancer.

Despite his transatlantic travel, Prince Harry seemed to be in good spirits, joking about American football being a reinvented version of rugby, except players get to take a breather every 15 seconds. However, people have been asking why he was only with his father for less than 45 minutes after flying overnight to London. And why did he head back to the United States so soon after?

Commentators have been peering into the royal family at this point in time to assess what is going on and whether there is friction between the brothers. Historian and author Sir Anthony Seldon warns that the rift between them will become more entrenched, and Prince Harry risks losing public support from this standoff.

“It’s astonishing how people can put so much vitriol and energy into despising someone. It’s extraordinarily damaging,” says psychologist Dr Sandra Wheatley. Brothers, even those in the Royal Family, fight and feud like anyone else. However, the pressure is on Prince William to take on more high-profile duties as the future king while Prince Harry pursues what look and feel like California ventures in a start-up.

Although the long-term trend seems to be more contact between Prince Harry and his father, there is still no sign of an olive branch between the brothers. And with a depleted number of working royals, Prince William will inevitably have to take on more responsibility while Catherine is recovering from surgery
