Taylor Swift gave fans a surprise treat during her recent Tokyo concert by performing ‘The Outside’ and ‘Superman’, two of her lesser-known tracks. The pop superstar’s ‘surprise songs’ segment saw her revisit older material and songs she has never before played live on tour. At Thursday’s concert at the Tokyo Dome stadium, Swift performed piano versions of both tracks, telling the crowd that she likes to challenge herself with songs that she hasn’t played before.
Swift knew that fans were eager for her to perform some “throwback” tracks before she launched into ‘Superman’ from her 2010 album ‘Speak Now’. The song hadn’t been performed live since 2011 according to Setlist.FM. Swift followed up with a piano version of ‘The Outside’, a track from her eponymous 2006 album that she hadn’t performed since 2008. The singer joked with the audience that she had written the song when she was just 12 years old, saying: “So this song is 175 years old.”
This is not the first time Swift has surprised fans with lesser-known tracks during her ‘Eras Tour’. During the first concert of her Tokyo residency, Swift debuted ‘Dear Reader’ and also performed ‘Holy Ground’. Her ‘Eras Tour’ continues in Australia next week, but before then there’s a chance Swift might show up at the Super Bowl on Sunday. Fans believe she will be supporting her boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs player Travis Kelce, whose team are playing in the game.
Meanwhile, Swift has also announced the global release date for an extended version of her ‘Eras Tour’ concert film on Disney+ – it will be available from March 15. And with her film, her ‘Eras Tour’, and her upcoming album ‘The Tortured Poets Department’, due to be released on April 19, 2024 looks set to be another exciting year for Taylor Swift fans
