Johnny Marr tells “true story” about getting egged on ‘Would I Lie To You’: “I was a human omelette”

Musician Johnny Marr recounted a “true story” on an episode of Would I Lie To You where he was egged in Manchester as a teenager. The BBC programme, first broadcast in 2007, encourages guests to tell tall tales to the opposing team across three rounds. Teams receive a point if they correctly guess whether a story is true or not. Marr recounted getting egged when he was sacked from his job at a local co-op in Manchester, which was a tradition at the time. He said he was met by a “firing squad” of around 12 to 14 adults.

The show had a guest called Danny who Marr had to convince the others helped him in some way after the incident. He went on to say that Danny lived a mile from his house and the two laughed at how he was covered in eggs upon arriving at Danny’s doorstep. Danny later invited Marr to a party, where he subsequently met his wife.

Would I Lie To You currently airs its 17th season with guests including McFly’s Danny Jones, comedian Romesh Ranganathan, and Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker. Other previous contestants include Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Lily Allen, Lady Leshurr and Tinchy Stryder. Marr recently announced co-headlining shows with The Charlatans for this summer followed by his 2024 greatest hits tour in support of Spirit Power: The Best Of Johnny Marr.

In an interview with NME about the compilation album in November 2023, Marr explained that someone described it as a “double album full of bangers”, but as “an artist or songwriter you kind of go ‘What does that mean?’ On reflection, I think a double album full of bangers? There’s nothing wrong with that”. Marr was a member of The Smiths and, since then, has become well known for his solo work along with collaborations with artists like electronic music duo The Avalanches
