In a thrilling match at Twickenham, England came back from a half-time deficit to edge out Wales in the Six Nations Championship. Just as in last week’s match against Italy, England trailed their opponents at the break. Wales claimed a penalty try and an Alex Mann score in the first half to threaten their first win at Twickenham since 2015. However, England’s resilience prevailed as Fraser Dingwall scored in the corner to drag England to within a point before George Ford’s penalty sealed the victory.
England was back at their Twickenham home and were intent on putting on a display after their World Cup warm-up defeat by Fiji last summer. Freddie Steward broke the line with a surging run in the opening minute and Ford’s kick wide handed them territory, but the final pass evaded them. Wales had limited possession but scored from their first visit into the England 22 when they were awarded a penalty try. Resulting in Ethan Roots being sent to the sin bin for continual English infringements.
Ben Earl’s first-half try powered England over before the controversy ensued with Ford’s conversion attempt, and England trailed at the break. But Jamie George rallied his side in the second half, and they showed the greater endeavour in attack, true to their word. Their resilience prevailed over youthful and spirited Wales side. The result brings England to the top of the Six Nations table after maintaining their winning start to the tournament.
Despite the defeat, Wales claimed a losing bonus point and remained fifth despite two opening losses. After the match, Eddie Jones, England coach, praised the tenacity of his side, stating “We showed a lot of toughness today, we held our nerve. We didn’t quite execute well enough, but the fight and toughness of the team was first-class.”
On the other hand, Wayne Pivac, Wales Head Coach, was proud of his youthful team’s performance. “I’m really pleased with the boys- that’s a step up. The try at the end was great, and the way the boys played. A lot of them are learning on the job.” Nevertheless, in the end, it was England’s resilience that prevailed over an energetic Welsh side
