A police horse named Aurora, who led the Queen’s state funeral procession in the last day of her service, has passed away at the age of 13. The grey shire horse was known to police officers as “Doris” and joined Thames Valley Police’s (TVP) mounted section in 2015. Aurora had a sweet nature and was a big gentle giant who always performed her duties well.

TVP’s mounted section paid tribute to Aurora, stating that they were extremely proud that her last deployment representing the force was for such a historic event. Before her retirement, Aurora led the funeral procession down the Long Walk on 19 September 2022. She also escorted royalty at Royal Ascot, worked at numerous football matches, music concerts, and was even on duty at the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

After retiring due to being lame, Aurora was under the care of the Horse Trust. The charity stated that Aurora was a stoic and stunning figure who could easily be spotted in the field. Aurora had a gentle character and striking size and beauty that made her a popular stable door for visitors to admire in her retirement. Unfortunately, Aurora suffered a ruptured ligament and had to be put to sleep due to other diagnoses and her sheer size.

The Horse Trust stated that Aurora had fitted straight into their herd of retirees and had made many equine and human friends due to her placid nature. They thanked her for her service and allowed her to be at peace and run pain-free. Aurora was a valued member of the mounted section and will be remembered fondly by those who knew her
