The entertainment conglomerate Disney has purchased a controlling stake of £1.1 billion ($1.5 billion) in video game company Epic Games, it was revealed on Monday. A joint announcement on the Epic Games website stated that the two firms will create a social and persistent game experience linking different franchises with Fortnite. However, the exact nature of this interactivity has yet to be revealed.
The statement also explained that the two firms will work together to make the new game compatible with various Disney, Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, and Avatar franchises. It will be possible for players to create their own experiences and share them with each other. “This will be all powered by Unreal Engine”, the statement said.
The chief executive officer of The Walt Disney Company, Robert A. Iger, spoke about the collaboration with Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games in an official statement. “Our exciting new relationship with Epic Games will bring together Disney’s beloved brands and franchises with the hugely popular Fortnite in a transformational new games and entertainment universe. This marks Disney’s biggest entry ever into the world of games and offers significant opportunities for growth and expansion”, said Iger.
