The Decemberists share first new song in six years, ‘Burial Ground’ featuring The Shins’ James Mercer

Indie band The Decemberists have announced a North American tour and new music, their first in six years. The band have teamed up with James Mercer, frontman of The Shins, for the new track, ‘Burial Ground’, about leaving troubles behind. The upbeat track features Mercer on backing vocals. The band’s last album, I’ll Be Your Girl, and its accompanying EP, Traveling On, were released in 2018.

Frontman Colin Meloy explained the inspiration behind the upbeat track: “‘Burial Ground’ is in that time-honoured pop song tradition, a paean to hanging out in the graveyard.” The Decemberists will be touring from spring across North America, opening with a gig in Kingston, NY and finishing in Oregon in August. They will also headline All Points East in London on August 25. Full tour dates and ticket details can be found on their website.

Meloy has also enjoyed success as an author, with his series of fantasy novels Wildwood set to be adapted for the screen. The movie is to star Carey Mulligan, Tom Waits, Angela Bassett, and other famous names. Other headliners at All Points East this year include The Postal Service and Death Cab For Cutie, with Gossip, Yo La Tengo, Sleater-Kinney and more set to perform as well. Remaining tickets are available for sale on the festival’s website.
