Red Velvet’s Irene renews contract with SM Entertainment

South Korean entertainment company SM Entertainment has confirmed Red Velvet member Irene has renewed her contract. The K-pop star has been represented by SM Entertainment since 2014, with the firm announcing today it has signed Irene up to continue with them.

In a statement to the South Korean media, SM Entertainment said Irene’s contract had been renewed based on “mutual trust and partnership”. The company added it would support the singer to “promote even more actively as a global artist” and asked fans to “show lots of love and interest going forward.”

Irene also spoke out, revealing she had decided to renew her contract with SM Entertainment based on “trust” for the company which had “made me who I am now.” Red Velvet’s other four members — Wendy, Joy, Seulgi, and Yeri — have yet to publicly announce if they have renewed their contracts with SM Entertainment.

Red Velvet released their last album, “Chill Kill”, in November 2023. The record received a glowing review from NME, with critic Tanu I Raj praising the group for “spinning chilling tales with flawless harmonies at the centre”.

Elsewhere, BLACKPINK member Lisa has released a cryptic teaser on her Instagram account, just a month after her confirmation she and her fellow bandmates would not be renewing their individual contracts with YG Entertainment.

Overall, it’s clear that Irene’s renewal is a significant development for Red Velvet fans, and one that SM Entertainment will be pleased to have secured. The future is uncertain for the remaining Red Velvet members. Fans will be hoping they too will pledge their futures to the entertainment company in the coming weeks and months
