Lindsey Buckingham says he would return to Fleetwood Mac “in a heartbeat, absolutely”

Former Fleetwood Mac member Lindsey Buckingham has expressed his interest in rejoining the band, stating that he would do so “in a heartbeat”. The musician recently appeared on SiriusXM with Conan O’Brien, where he discussed the band’s legacy and his departure from the line-up in 2018. The future of Fleetwood Mac remains uncertain following the death of longstanding member Christine McVie, who died in November 2022 aged 79 after a short illness. While it has not been confirmed whether the band will continue without her, Buckingham has said that he would be open to the idea if the opportunity arose.

Buckingham’s replacement by Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers’ Mike Campbell and Crowded House’s Neil Finn was a point of contention for him, saying that the band allowing that to happen disrespected their legacy. He said that the band collectively allowing the replacement, out of weakness to some degree, did not honour the legacy Fleetwood Mac had built over the course of nearly 45 years of difficult moments and difficult years.

In addition to Buckingham, others in the band have expressed their uncertainty about the future of Fleetwood Mac without McVie. In a similar sentiment, Stevie Nicks claimed that “there’s no reason” to keep the band going as they could never replace McVie.

Despite being fired from the band in 2018, Buckingham has stated multiple times that he would be welcomed back to Fleetwood Mac, with most members keen to see him return. During a 2021 appearance on the WTF With Marc Maron Podcast, he claimed that “pretty much everyone [in the band] would love to see me come back”.

While the future of Fleetwood Mac is uncertain, Buckingham’s keenness to rejoin the band could give fans hope that one day the iconic lineup could be reunited. The unique “synergy” within Fleetwood Mac is something that is difficult to replace, and as Buckingham put it back in 2021, the band didn’t work as a band on paper
