Arctic Monkeys got nominated for three Grammy Awards, but they came out without a single trophy. The Sheffield-based rock band were up for the Best Alternative Music Album for their album “The Car,” the Best Alternative Music Performance and Best Rock Performance. Despite having been nominated for a Grammy nine times in the past, Arctic Monkeys have yet to secure any wins. The Brit band drummer, Matt Helders, expressed his disappointment with the event while haling ‘Sporty Spice’ aka Mel C of the Spice Girls after he met her at the 2024 Grammys. Helders posted a picture with her on his wife’s Instagram Stories and said: “I may have been robbed of a Grammy or three, but I met sporty spice which makes up for everything, and my wife cried when she met her.”
Mel C happened to be the ray of hope for Helders as he lost out to Boygenius and Paramore. During the ceremony, Helders and his wife, Amanda Blank, bumped into Spice Girls’ Mel C and hailed her. Blank added: “What a gorgeous human inside and out, gave Matt and I nothing but love as we fanned out like crazy people. I am over the moon, beyond it, into the next galaxy!” Helders, who also featured on Iggy Pop’s 2016 album, “Post Pop Depression,” which was nominated for a Grammy but lost to David Bowie’s “Blackstar,” has expressed his views on several occasions about how award shows can be political and not necessarily reflective of an artist’s talent.
While Helders found comfort in meeting Mel C, Phoebe Bridgers with her Boygenius bandmates and SZA won the most awards on the night, taking home three awards – Best Rock Performance, Best Rock Song, and Best Alternative Music Album – as well as Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for her collaboration with SZA on “Ghost In The Machine”. Rapper Killer Mike also walked away with three awards at the ceremony, for Best Rap Song, Best Rap Performance, and Best Rap Album, but was later arrested for a “misdemeanor.” Furthermore, Miley Cyrus won her first two Grammy awards, for Best Pop Solo Performance and Record Of The Year for ‘Flowers’, and Victoria Monét was named Best New Artist while Taylor Swift made history as she won Album Of The Year for “Midnights”.
