Buckingham Palace has stated that King Charles has been diagnosed with a form of cancer; however, the type of cancer has not been revealed. The cancer was discovered during his recent treatment for an enlarged prostate but is not prostate cancer, according to a statement by the Palace. The King started “regular treatments” on Monday and will postpone public duties during his treatment.
The Palace has not shared any further details about the stage of cancer or prognosis, but he remains optimistic about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible, said the Palace. The type of cancer found during his treatment is being treated specifically, and he has commenced treatment as an outpatient.
While he pauses his public events, the King will continue with his constitutional role as head of state, including paperwork and private meetings. There is a constitutional mechanism for when the head of state is unable to carry out official duties. There are “counsellors of state” who can be appointed to stand in for the monarch. Queen Camilla, Prince William, the Princess Royal, and Prince Edward are presently the counsellors of state. Non-working royals, such as Prince Harry, are no longer called upon for such duties.
The King chose to make public his prostate treatment to encourage more men to get prostate checks, and he was happy with the increased awareness about the issue. The Royal Society of Medicine thanked the King for highlighting “how cancer is indiscriminate” and urged members of the public eligible for cancer screenings to make an appointment
