Following her appearance at the 2024 Grammys, fans are sharing Tracy Chapman’s original Grammy performance of her hit song ‘Fast Car’ from 1989. This is after Chapman joined country music star, Luke Combs on stage to perform a version of the same song during the event. Combs had made the song more popular in 2023 after releasing a cover which was later certified double platinum in the United States and won the Single of the Year and Song of the Year awards at the 2023 Country Music Association Awards. The two musicians had been rumoured to perform together and Chapman’s performance highlighted her prowess on stage despite not having performed in front of a camera since 2009.
Other fans are reacting to how the song ‘Fast Car’, which addresses anti-blackness, police brutality, domestic violence and Reagan’s destruction of the lower and middle class, lost Song and Record of the Year to ‘Don’t Worry, Be Happy’ at the 1989 Grammys. The Grammy performance from 1989 is being shared widely online, with many praising Chapman as an “amazing singer and icon” and a “true gem in the music world.”
In response to Combs’ cover of ‘Fast Car’, Chapman had said in a statement: “I never expected to find myself on the country charts, but I’m honoured to be there.” In turn, Combs had acknowledged the power of Chapman’s songwriting saying, “Tracy Chapman wrote this perfect song that I first heard with my dad, and it has stayed with me.”
Other notable moments from the 2024 Grammys include Joni Mitchell reflecting on her surprise appearance at the 2022 Newport Folk Festival as she collected the 10th Grammy of her career.
