Wales and Lions legend John dies aged 79

Welsh rugby legend Barry John has passed away at the age of 79. John played in 25 internationals for Wales and five Tests for the British and Irish Lions, and was a key figure in the team that beat New Zealand in 1971. He retired in 1972 at just 27 years old. John was also central to Wales’ 1971 Grand Slam, their first since 1952, and was regarded as one of the greatest fly-halves of all time.

John’s family said that he passed away peacefully at the University Hospital of Wales, with his wife and four children by his side. They added that John was a “loving Dadcu [grandfather]” to 11 grandchildren and “much-loved brother” to his siblings.

John’s half-back partnership with team-mate Sir Gareth Edwards is still widely regarded as one of the greatest in the history of rugby, and they helped Wales win three Five Nations titles, a Grand Slam, and two Triple Crowns. John finished his career with 120 points for Wales and the Lions in his 30 internationals.

John is the second Welsh rugby legend to have passed away this year, following the death of full-back JPR Williams
