UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has arrived in Northern Ireland to celebrate the return of power-sharing government. Together with Irish Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, Mr. Sunak is expected to attend Stormont on Monday, where he will meet with First Minister Michelle O’Neill and Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly. During this visit, he will also engage with public service workers.
This is the second time the UK Prime Minister is visiting Northern Ireland since the return of power-sharing government. Mr. Sunak had made commitments to get Stormont up and running, citing it as a key priority for his government.
It was over a decade ago when the country regained its power-sharing government. This comes as a breakthrough after the Democratic Unionist Party ended its boycott over post-Brexit trade rules.
Significant steps were taken by the DUP, stated Mr. Sunak during an address at Westminster last week. On Tuesday, the party reached a deal with Mr. Sunak’s government that included the passing of new legislation referred to as the Windsor Framework.
£3.3 billion in funding was promised for the restored Northern Ireland Executive. While much of the investment is aimed at stabilising public services and settling public sector pay disputes, the parties are keen on understanding the future finances of Stormont
