The Women and Equalities Committee (WEC) has released a report that highlights a misogynistic culture within the music industry and calls for immediate action to be taken. The inquiry, involving cross-party MPs, discovered that sexual harassment and abuse are common occurrences in the sector. According to the report, the music industry is a “boys club,” and urgent education on the issues of misogyny, gender-based violence, and sexual harassment is required from the sector and the government. Misogyny In Music found that many women remain silent about their experiences to avoid the potentially career-ending consequences.
The report also found that female artists are frequently undervalued, subjected to undue focus on their appearance, and required to work harder to obtain the recognition that their abilities merit, in contrast to their male counterparts. The underlying culture frequently forces women to work alongside “sexual abusers protected by the system” at music industry events. The report includes several comprehensive recommendations, including the proposed amendment of the Equality Act by ministers.
One of the recommendations calls for the provision of the same protections from discrimination to freelance workers as to employees, with a call for the government to protect workers from harassment by third parties. The proposal was initially supported but later rejected by the government last year. Furthermore, the report recommends the provision of more funding for career paths for women, such as working in male-dominated areas like sound engineering, A&R, and production.
The report also recommends that record labels and firms with more than 100 employees publish information on the diversity of their rosters. The data will include information on the diversity of their workforce, gender, and ethnicity pay gaps. Another proposal is for licensing requirements to be introduced for music studios, music venues, artist managers, and security staff to tackle sexual harassment.
In conclusion, the report states that women have had their careers ruined and lives destroyed by men who have never been reprimanded for their actions. The music industry is a force for social change; however, it has significant work to do when it comes to discrimination, harassment, and sexual abuse against women.
