London’s Southbank Centre is due to present an event in celebration of the 90s Polish rave scene, featuring a collection of short films at the Kinoteka Polish Film Festival. The showcase, entitled “Rave: Recharge”, will include an evening event with Polish DJs, Catz ‘n Dogz, GW Harrison and Blanka Barbara, paying tribute to thirty years of Polish dance music. Taking place on March 22, the eight short films explore the underground rave culture of 90s Poland. Most of the films are footage transferred from VHS tapes to digital video, ranging from twenty minutes to three minutes long.

According to Southbank Centre’s description of the event, “techno was a key motif of the raves and underground dance events”, adding that this was parallel to the Polish political and economic system in the early 1990s. “On one hand, raves were an expression of the optimism of this period of transformation. On the other, they manifested the anxieties of those times of social and technological acceleration,” the description adds.

The after party will include showings of more videography and futuristic lighting design, as well as a further insight into the 90s Polish rave scene. This spring, Southbank Centre will also celebrate South Asian music and culture with its new series, South Asian Sounds, showcasing “varied musical traditions” of Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, and Afghan music. The festival will feature UK-based South Asian dance collective and festival, Dialled In.
