Daft Punk, the world-renowned French electronic music duo, still has a fifth album in the works, according to a recent interview with former collaborator and session drummer, Quinn Smith. The album is said to be in “limbo” after being initiated in 2018, following the duo’s previous studio album, Random Access Memories. Smith affirms that the album is “coming out of the locker” and that he has seen “beginning stages of it” while working alongside the duo in the past. Smith had joined the Daft Punk collaboration team as one of the last collaborators on Random Access Memories and is reported to be the first on the new album project that never materialized.
Smith, an interviewee on “alt.news 26:46” in a segment titled “Using DIY Instruments to Discover New Sounds,” shared his experience with Daft Punk, explaining how he had seen Thomas Bangalter experiment with a computer program on a keyboard in the beginning stages of the album. Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, the two members of Daft Punk, are known for their innovative sound experimentation, and Smith expressed his belief that the unnamed project would include a lot of “spontaneous things.”
Daft Punk has released only four studio albums since their debut in 1997 with Homework and one soundtrack album for Tron Legacy, making the upcoming album the duo’s fifth studio album. Despite the album being in a state of limbo, Smith hopes that Daft Punk will do something about it in the future. On the other hand, he says it’s up to the duo to decide whether to work on the album or not, though they allowed him to speak on it.
Daft Punk is a celebrated electronic duo globally, and last year, the duo celebrated ten years of Random Access Memories by releasing never-seen-before footage of the recording. Nile Rodgers, DJ Falcon, Todd Edwards, Julian Casablancas, and Pharrell Williams were featured in the documentary named ‘Memory Tapes’. The remarkable anniversary was further celebrated with a drumless edition of the 2013 Random Access Memories album
