Assembly to return to Somerset House Studios for the first time in four years

Somerset House Studios has announced the relaunching of its series called Assembly for the first time in four years. The programme will be held over four days and will delve into the themes of diaspora, political linguistics, climate change, spirituality and more, with brand-new collaborations and live premieres. Much of the work has been developed by artists at Somerset House Studios and will travel to international festivals such as the Rewire festival held in the Hague and the Edinburgh Art Festival later on in the year.

The first performance in the Assembly series is set to be ‘Where the Veil Is Thin’ from Bríghde Chaimbeul, a Scottish bagpipe player in collaboration with dancer Temitope Ajose, sculptor Vivienne Griffin and choreographer Maëva Berthelot, in April. The performance looks at the themes of Gaelic folklore and nature.

All through the series, there will be various multi-disciplinary performances including those from exlRtuth, Zein Majali, and Lord Tusk. Recipients of Somerset House Studios’ Music and Sound Residency, exlRtuth will team up with Mark Leckey of NTS to perform their new score for ‘Romeo’s Fall,’ a new piece traversing romance and romanticism in a post-industrial North East England. Lord Tusk will present a new experimental moving image called ‘small talk KILLS,’ which will also include a score performed live by the artist.

Finally, many of the performances featured in the Assembly series will travel to international festivals such as Rewire Festival in the Hague and Edinburgh Art Festival later in the year. The celebrated event will set itself apart with thought-provoking themes in sound, music and performance
